If they use a trunked system, you will want a digital trunked scanner. If they use a new phase ii system, you will need something with that capability. The most important thing, besides making sure your radio can hear the local emergency bands, is being able to filter our encrypted transmissions. My whistler cannot do that, and it's annoying as shit hearing the police gurgling static on my city's trunked system.
