UPDATE:
I'm hunting bear again tomorrow after having failed to see anything today. I started the hunt at around 6:30, blowing into a fawn call for about an hour and 15 minutes while in a clearing along the side of a clear cut. Then the rest was a matter of walking along the clear cut, still using the call as I made my way to my car.
My plan this time is to set up in the clear cut at around 6:00, spray down with scent killer, and then use my call since I'll have a better field of view. Also, since I'm in Oregon and can't use bait unless it's on my person, I may have a vanilla soaked rag on me.
Thoughts?
