I have thalassophobia, yet I love the beach and lakes. Just recently I went on a California coast beach trip and realized that it was almost kind of fruitless since I constantly kept luring myself away from going too deep while my friends kept pushing me to go further. It was so bad that most of the time I just ended up sitting waist-deep with the waves splashing while my friends were off scaling rocks and diving into deep 40 feet water.
What has me tied up though is I wasn't always like this. It's weird because when I was 8-11 I wasn't scared of deep water at all and swam freely a lot. But then out of nowhere I just got this eerie sensation that if I can't touch the bottom, ANYTHING big can be under me. I know whales aren't carnivorous, but that's honestly one of the scariest thing if I saw or felt one under me about to breach. Funny enough, I don't find any of these things scary by looking at pictures, but I guess it's the threat of the unknown, vastness of the ocean, and textural feel of a sea creature that scares me. Plus, I feel at my most vulnerable in water.
But back to the point, is it weid that I have these feelings? Do any of you feel this way too? Am I bitch? Should I try to get out of this fear by training or should I stay above deep water in boats, kyaks, and jet skies? Lay it on me, /out/. Discuss it.
