It seems that people build the original mould/form/strongback out of plywood spines which are then covered with insulation foam, which is then covered in plaster.
Once the form is all ready to go the kevlar is laid on top and various types of epoxies and things added. Eventually the form is taken away and you're left with the kevlar canoe shell.
