cairns are used and even detailed in guidebooks as trail markers in chaotic terrain (think granite talus slopes in yosemite). we rebuild and maintain these, and if a clearer trail is discovered/develops we build another for reference.
these have generally been cleared with park officials in climbing areas.
please don't be a dick and kick down our trail markers.
