I would also say that any "self important elitism" comes from him actually having real appreciation for wilderness in a wrapped in plastic post war america. Say what you want about Abbey but he was the real deal, and his emphasis on a pragmatic and almost militant approach to conservation was and is a sorely needed influence in that political sphere IMO. the bit at the end of the book where he encounters a german expatriate trying to redpill him was amusing to say the least. Had he had access to the internet as we do today... who knows.
