I go with lightweight synthetics including fleece and layering for waterproofness and warmth.I'd agree, as synthetics are the best performing but, OP said he'll be "hiking and camping", which implies strolling around near camp, where weight isn't an issue and hanging out by the camp fire, where synth clothing is very susceptible to getting pin-holes burned into it from popping cinders.
I've had a Carhartt wool blanket lined "Detroit Jacket" for years as a work jacket (machinist here) and that, along with jeans is a better choice for sitting around a camp fire.
