I've been scouting areas out in my neck of the woods (Colorado anon). I still haven't found a place that fits all of the criteria (away from any roads or trails, a reliable creek or stream within a half a mile, good soil, and fish within a mile or two). I plan to build a partially underground cabin about 10 ft x 10 ft x 8 ft (4 ft of it underground) with log walls and a mine style roof, then cover it with the dirt I dug out and plant some wild grass on top of the roof and walls. Think of a partially underground log cabin with the walls and roof covered in dirt and grass. Eventually I'll mount a single small solar panel in a tree with a golf cart battery, just enough to run a single LED light bulb and a phone charger. Then I'll grow some medicinal herbs so I can have fresh tea every time I'm there. A rocket stove made out of rocks and clay will efficiently heat it in the winter and allow me to cook. I plan for this to be a weekend retreat that can survive the winter (-10F/-23C).
