>>1999361They can take up as much or as little space as you want them to really, fruit comes from the new growth each season so the goal is to let the main come grow to the size you want, then get it to grow offshoots that will fruit and be pruned back every season. Pictures is how I have mine setup, the 4 vines on the left are about the size that the ones on the right started at last year. My goal is to try and get the main vine for each plant climbing strait up the trellis and then have fruiting offshoots to each side that I prune back each winter. But you can also grow them on a wire or fence style trellis, which my neighbor had growing up, or you can grow them over a wooden structure to create a shaded area underneath, which my grandma had.
