They're as good as your ability to start a fire in the weather conditions you're in. They also need constant attention throughout the cooking time, any absence longer than a quick piss will leave you with a pile of quickly cooling ashes.
Unlike gas or alcohol stoves, they radiate a modicum of heat, so that's nice when it's cold. Plus, they give you some of that fun of tending a fire, even if it's a toy-sized cucked one.
But they do work, you can boil 1l of water in under 10 minutes on a few handfuls of twigs. Also make sure you have a dedicated pot pouch as it will get sooty.
