I got started this year with growing vegetables on my balcony and it was super fun, you guys were a great help. I also learned a lot, including how to fight back against aphids, maybe I can even prevent two of my plants getting infested with powdery mildew next year.
My question for now is: Is there a way I can prepare/improve the soil in the pots that I used up now for next year? I am still just on a balcony, but can I just remove the dead plants now, plant new ones next spring and fertilize? Or are there additional steps I can take/have to take to make the soil fresh again for next year? A compost is going to be an issue, unless I can do so without odor, since as I said it's on a balcony.

Small update in case someone here gives a shit, you guys helped me when I asked about growing from seed.
Progress from the stuff I grow on my city balcony, with dates. Some great growth for 43 days.
Currently growing on the balcony:
>bok choi/pak choi
>chard
>lavender
>salad
>asian greens (different salad types)
>sorrel
>kohlrabi
>sunchoke
>cucumber
>indian cress
>tomato
Not in picture, but on balcony too
>chili
and herbs in hanging pots not in picture
>mint
>rosemary
>thyme
>laurel

Thanks for the help and any anons who think they can't grow stuff because they have a balcony and not much space, you absolutely can and it's pretty fun. Highly recommended.
