If you just wanna do some underground exploring then abandoned mines can be way easier to locate depending on your area. Records are usually public on sites like
thediggings.com, you'll just have to sort out which ones are still accessible and not closed off/flooded.
Old mines (especially coal mines) can be pretty dangerous though, so be careful.
