The key is low population density, and the average wanna-be criminal has no idea if the potential target is armed (and the long winters freeze out the riff-raff) Our gun laws are pretty lax. All you need is an instant background check and off you go with a new pistol or whatever.
And just about every predator has a hunting season, so they don't bother people at all. Twice I've seen black bears here and they run off as soon as they see me, unlike Yosemite in California (used to hike and backpack there a lot), where they are "protected," (except when a problem bear gets shot) and go after people's food, etc., on a regular basis.
An armed society is a polite society, and as long as the human population density isn't too huge, everyone gets along juts fine.
