I got lost in a national park in Senegal for a few days once. My map made it seem like there were villages all over the place, but each one I came to was just an intersection of an abandoned dirt road built by the French during colonial times.
Eventually I stopped following roads and started to follow the river so I had an unlimited supply of water. Luckily I had enough food to survive for many days.
I stumbled on a ranger station at the end of the 4th day. The rangers weren't happy to see me as tourists aren't allowed to be there there without a guide. They told me there were lions all over the park and I was lucky. I'm not sure if that's true, as I was so smelly and loud as I crashed through the bush, any half-competent lion would have found me. But they were chill dudes, gave me food, let me stay the night, and drove me back to the highway on their motorbike.
