>>2593894I (poorly) fish both salt and fresh. Salt I usually fish the beach or the piers rather than boat, so I usually use a heavier 8ft rod so I can cast a heavy sinker a ways out over the surf. Got this little bonnet head yesterday on a pompano rig with some shrimp.
When I fish freshwater for bass and stuff, I usually use a light 7ft rod because most of the ponds around here don't require me to cast far and there's more visible structure around the bank I can fish.
