the only best midlayer is to have them all.
here is a wool sweater, a fleece, a softshell, a heavy wool shirt and a light wool shirt. i also have not pictured a synthetic puffy vest, a down vest, a synthetic hooded puffy (that barely fits anymore sigh) and a few down hooded puffies of varying warmth. so almost every single possible midlayer. there's a situation for all of them if you /out/ enough and in enough different places.
