The next day I hit Great Sand Dunes National Park (and Preserve). I spent a full 24 hours off my bike, taking a day hike up along one of the creeks which goes around the dunes, doing some stargazing at the foot of the dunes, and then walking on the dunes the next day.
The place is really unique; I've been to the sand dunes in Oregon before, but the ones here are formed by an entirely different mechanism, and they have their own unique ecosystem. Something like 80 species of animals live there, and nowhere else in the world.
