/k/ here. I guess this is the best place to ask; what's the cheapest tent that can be carried in a ~30 liter (51 x 29 x 16 cm) bag? I have a very cheap, very light tent that is less than 3lbs, but I'm sure will shit the bed when I need it most. I also carry a survival tarp, a cheap bivy, emergency blankets, and extra clothes. Plus a yoga mat.
However, as things get colder, I really don't feel confident in this sort of jumbled together budget sleeping "system" I have.
I have a real tent and a pretty good sleeping bag, but I'm looking for a portable shelter solution, rather than something that I can just throw in the car. I really like winter camping and want to challenge myself so that if I needed to, I could just walk into the wilderness with just the shit on my back and have a chance.
