You _can_ inflate a pad by mouth, but narrow valves make you work harder and the water vaopr means it can freeze, reducing your R value, and you'll have to let your pad's internals dry out back home to prevent mold.
A inflation sack can solve both those issues, but may not always come with the pad. For what manufacters charge for the damn things, they should though.
