The area of Zone 5 where I live is listed as Zone 5, but temps often dip to below -40F. Normally, it is only about -15F.

The rest of your point is completely moot since I stated that I do go outside quite often. Winter just fucking sucks most years now with all the flooding (can't leave my area due to it since I'm surrounded by rivers. But, yes, people really are that mentally weak. That's why those types of things work and trap them.
Maybe this trend of shit winters will continue and this area will turn into a Zone 8 or 9 from now on. That'd be sweet since I farm and garden so much. I'll just have to go on vacation somewhere to ice fish.
