For me batoning is for survival situations and of course any situation where I'm not carrying an axe, like any dayhike.
It's very unlikely for you to find yourself in a survival situation with any of you gear. Most likely you have nothing or you have some random stuff. Splitting and cutting wood is possible with many metallic objects. Whatever you have, you need to understand the weaknessess of your tool, otherwise you'll break it.
While I'm not a batonist, I think batoning is an essential skill. When making precice cuts, even an axe can be batoned.
