Last year I bought some ornamental squash/gourds. I tossed them out and where they landed sprang a few vines late in the season. I just went out and picked a bunch of them. These things are normally hard as rocks in the store because they've been picked fully mature and dried a bit.
These are extremely tender when immature and taste like summer squash. I always check to see if they are too ripe by pressing my fingernail into the skin. If it goes in easy then they are still edible. Although, the seeds can be a bit hard when that are bigger and the skin is still soft. Those are easy to scoop out though.
