Take pic related of casio variant released last year. It has all the busy design removed and whats left is a very tame office/ladys watch. That niche is dominated by automatic/manual watches for more than a hundred years now.
Meanwhile you are trying to make something that's cheap, hip, durable and breaks all the tame rules of established watch design. Gshocks are basically lady gaga in meat dress - they good at what they do and bring attention to themselves with unconventional looks.
Also that's how futuristic design looked back in the 80's. People will say the same about current watches in 40 years if any of them will stand the trials of time (no pun). But given how planed obsolesce is these days is i wouldn't count on anything like gshocks being invented in the foreseeable future.
Thus the design itself, be it cringy to younger generations, stands for something that is lost in todays world - durability. And once again its rebelling against current sleek office/apple/garmin watches that will be forgotten in the next decade.
