I can use a waterproof jacket in every situation, both in the wild and in public. Instead of buying two garments, I get one that also can be used in the winter, and keeps bugs out, etc.
Ok, you got your poncho on the roof of your shelter, now you can't leave the shelter without getting wet? A poncho is unrivaled in ventilation and good for draping over your backpack, but the rest of that shit is better with just bringing a tarp.
