Production in this graph may blip up a bit but you need to factor in energy returned on energy invested. Pumping fraking juice in all day requires energy and raw materials. Sure methods have improved but all the light sweet easy stuff is gone, originally it pumped itself out.
The cognitive dissonance regarding energy in the US is partly due to the dumbing down, partly due to the power of the military which can invade foreign countries and steal it, but sooner or later, a shock is going to come. It will be bigger than the 70's oil shock simply because there are more consumers than ever, the US will be hit hardest like all big importers. You cannot deny the situation in the ME is fragile and getting more unstable every single day, its just a matter of time.
