My "survival kit" is kept in my car's trunk. I was caught in a snow storm driving home from college many moons ago (New York to Illinois) and had only dirty laundry, notebooks & books, and an empty gatorade bottle. Ended up stranded on the side of the road putting on all sorts of clothes to make it through the night without freezing.
My kit is nothing more than a bunch of beef jerky, tinder, lighters, warm clothes, tarp, flashlight, rope, and sleeping bag. Not much but I do raid it on some drives home for food or when I want to drive out and car camp for a night randomly.
