I did a solo campout last week, not far from home, just about a 20min walk into the woods from the house. I do this fairly often to relax/enjoy the outdoors.
The one thing that bugs me out when in these woods really is bumping into a person. It's all private property and far away from anything that would bring people around. I grew up here, so for like nearly 30 years Ive never had a single encounter with anything but wildlife, BUT last week something large was out tromping around the woods terrorizing me. It came back 5 times, and every time I'd approach it with my flashlight and yell-out, it would run away violently, crashing through the dark in a frenzy. It kept coming back though, so by 2am I aborted the whole camp, grabbed my hatchet and day pack and booked it back to the house.
Almost guaranteed it wasn't a person though, because it was too dark for them to not have a light and also very unlikely behavior. There has been a massive increase in bears lately and I suspect it was a curious black bear.
It was very intense though, and for four hours I kept it at bay, but fuck... no way I could go to sleep out there in my hammock if a fucking bear is so determined to overrun me.
tl;dr: fucking unidentified and persistent footsteps terrorizing me when I'm alone innawoods
