There are many products that filter water that are available at your local sporting goods store or online. Just pick one that fits your budget.
Also, you can bring tablets, but they are pretty nasty
Boiling works too

Depends on what you are trying to filter out. By just using a piece of clothe you can filter out some stuff that are pretty bad but it will be totally ineffective against other things.
