Another concern is prevailing winds and cardinal directions in reference to the sun in your location. Prevailing winds will mean storms will normally blow rain/snow in one main direction. You don't want your porch, main entrances, or walkway on that side of your house/buildings; because battling driving rain while herding goats into the barn sucks. The direction the sun takes is extremely important. This is for cooling/heating of your house and buildings, lighting or shading your greenhouses, vegetables gardens, and food storage. You'll want to use that to its maximum potential. Something as simple as having the kitchen on the East side (bright & sunny in morn) instead of the North side (dark & gloomy in morn) may make all the difference in a person's mood and outlook for the entire day. At least for whoever is the cook for the day.
Small things like having a place to hose off your boots, dogs, or kids, out of the weather before going into the house, makes all the difference. Food storage should be near the kitchen, not over the hill in the root cellar on the wrong end of the property. Same thing for stuff like wood storage for a stove or feed storage for animals. Draw up plans. That will help you quickly spot good building positioning when looking for property to purchase.
One big thing, your neighbors. Check them out before buying property. Actually meet them in person at least once. Actually check them out online, even so far as hiring a company to give you a run down on who they are. You'll be living near them with your family. Make sure they are not known for being fucked up or worse. The best neighbors will be other farmers with home you can trade ideas, knowledge, services, help, and products.
This is certainly not everything, but it may be a place to start or at least contain 1 item of info you did not consider before.
