There's nothing quite like the moist, densely-packed verdant environment that much of the Appalachians can offer - especially on the good side of the rain shadow.
The West is, in general, a harsher dryer climate that produces less useful and beautiful land. Sure, you can see further because trees don't grow in arid conditions as well, but the rest of it is objectively worse.
