>>1255588You can tour on pretty much anything if you're hard headed enough, and people do, but a full on road racing bike or dual suspension MTB won't be great. A dedicated touring bike would be ideal but they can be expensive, you can also use an old rigid MTB, hybrid, or cyclocross bike.
You want something with room for wide tires and mounting points for racks and long enough chainstays that your heels aren't hitting the back panniers. You also want something that's good enough quality you won't be breaking spokes or pedal spindles on the road.
