>>834186>>834117Geotechnical Engineer here. What I do a combination of geology and civil engineering; I have an engineering degree. We do several things related to house foundations, particularly driven pile foundations. We start out doing a geotechnical evaluation with soil borings to find out what soil layers are present, then calculate the bearing capacity of the soil and design a foundation. We also use seismographs to monitor ground vibrations while the piles are being driven.
It's not as /out/ as some of these oil exploration jobs in the middle of nowhere, but I like the diversity of what I do. There are at least 6 Geotechnical companies in the area, so job prospects are fairly good as long as construction keeps up.
