- never walk on false floors (wood platforms sometimes held up only by only rot over workings)
- listen for how your echo sounds in workings (if it doesnt travel very far or not at all your in weak rock and it could be very dangerous)
- never ever touch old explosives, a kid I used to go exploring with lost 4 fingers to an unused blasting cap that for what ever reason went off while he was holding it.
- stay out of mines with both stagnent water and lots of old wood. Microbes can use up all the oxygen in the workings decomposing the wood and moving though undisturbed water can release hydrogen sulfide gas which can kill.
- check for air flow, if cold air is coming out of a mine than its probably safe from toxic gases.
