>>903939pkay, so heres what youre gonna do
get a 9 foot 2x tippet, a baggie of 10mm beads, some size 6 egg hooks, and some strike indicators
set your drag so that it pulls where youre comfortable, and since you wont have a fighting butt you have one option: opu your hand on the butt of the rod and pretend you do like pic related, dont touch the spool. dont grab up on the blank either, youll be tempted, but dont do it, look up saltwater fly rods breaking, and thats how most of the time.
youre going to thread a bead on your tipper, then tie on your egg hook, this is where the toothpick comes in
put the bead 1.5-2 inches over the hook, then cram a toothpick in the hole, and break it off
take your strike indicator and set it appropriately, and dead drift it
the second that strike indicator does anything other than drift normally, set the hook, and for god sakes make sure youre holding that rod tight. if its a stick, bring it in, and unfoul it
if it starts to swim away, feather the line through your fingers till youre fighting from the reel and have a ball/heart attack and take your bloody time so you dont break your rod. for landing, what youre going to have to do is hold your fly rod out in one hand straight out and far from your body, and your rod pointing almost straight up. you have to grab your line, and wuickly grab the fish by the tail. grab hard cause it will try to run, and if he slips out let the line go (it should be hooked under the index finger of your rod hand) then keep fighting him, if you get one hooked youre already ahead of the game, dont throw it away by getting over eager to land it, you have all the time in the world
tl:dr
pin the bead 2 inches over a #6 hook on a 9 foot 2x tippet, dont hesitate to set the hook ever, and dont horse the fish or break your rod
