If I was hiking solo then another solo hiker tagged along with me I wouldn't mind. If people are in a group though their desires for human interaction are most likely already being met and a "third wheel" would be a burden on their own interactions. That being said I wasn't with OP in his trek so things might have gone very differently and the group may have enjoyed making his acquaintance.
