18 or 19. I was a boy scout when I was younger, and got less interested in camping and, to a larger extent, all the goofy ceremony, so I quit when I went to high school.
Then I went off to college in an /out/ kind of area and started going camping alone for a couple days nearby, realized how much I enjoyed it, and by the time I graduated I was taking multi-month trips alone.
