If they swim in water too long (~1-2 days), they DEAD
If they dry out during any point of germination, they DEAD
I hear some seeds require some average moisture content somewhere in the first week, like youd find when you dig up your garden on a random day, to pop open their shell.
In theory if the holes are closed moisture will not escape. Just keep it between 20-25C (temperature is very important), open those holes when the first leafes start unfolding and they need direct sunlight. The more the better. If the stem grows reeeaally long and thin they are not getting enough.
