the ecwcs level 2 grid fleece is one of the best synthetic midlayers on a budget or for beginners. there's better stuff out there but its usually $80-150.
the ecwcs fleece baselayers are also a really good value for getting into winter backpacking. good choice if you are not spending for a set of heavy wool.
