if that assumption is correct the problem you described could be one of three things
1: you crank the handle, and it makes almost a buzzing sound, but isn't actually reeling in the line
if that's the case something is up with your drag, either it's too low and it's a simple matter of tightening it, or it could be broken and it's fucked, but i doubt this is the problem you're having, and option 2 &3 are more likely to help you

go buy some new line, since it sounds like you're a noob i reccomend berkley trilene in a similar thickness to what came on your reel. bring that home, pull all the old line off your reel, tie on the new line (i just use a uni knot) and respool the reel. there are plenty of videos on that
