>>2006773 said and that worked great. You can find the land on the BLM website, the interactive map. Did not have as good of luck on the national forests, which is a complete 180 from where I grew up, but the forests in so cal were cramped as fuck and I never felt like I could just drive down an old lumber road and be left alone. The best I found for national forests are Yellow Post sites, which are free, and are easily found on google (ie. “yellow post campsite San Bernardino”)
