The white rectangle on the tree in the background is a "blaze", and that is how you follow the trail, from white blaze to white blaze.
The entire trail is blazed like that from Springer in GA to Katahdyn in Maine.
I was actually going downhill for this, and turned around to snap this picture, this is just south of North Adams, MA, and was the climb down from the Mt. Greylock massif.
