The distance from the edge of the spoon to the edge of the drilled hole is the biggest factor of the ring size you can use. If the distance is too wide, you'll stretch out your split ring (like my first spoon) or not be able to fit it on. You can get rather close to the edge with the drilled hole. I recommend using a center punch to help lock in the drill bit tip. Also, I use a tiny drop of oil where the whole goes when drilling.
