I have been scouting the only piece of public land in my county for a couple of weeks now. Shotgun starts next week and I'm really stoked. Archery started here on the first. It has been pretty cool and the grasses have just begun to turn green. There is burning all over the prairie and its making things super hazy. I have seen lots of birds as I have been driving at 720-740 am and 640pm. I have only seen droppings and tracks on the WIHA land here in Kansas.
I have never hunted turkey before. I am used to long stalking deer so the sit and wait and calling of turkey hunting is a serious challenge. I've been listening to quite a bit of podcasts about turkey hunting, calling and general tactics since November. I don't have a bunch of dough to spend so here is my set up.
>weapon
I have a ww 2 Savage 720 12g. It has a 29in barrel that reaches out pretty well. I have a 870 express that I need to get from my mom's. My dad just got it before for he passed this summer and I haven't shot it, but I assume it has a factory full choke with it which I will use in place of the a5 clone savage. #5 lead shot.
>concealment
Dark colored camp pants, green and brown plaid shirt, brown headscarf and my camp baseball cap atop. I'll try to set up concealed hopefully under one of these little juniper that are all over. I wear safety glasses and orange into and out of the field for my safety. Never know about public land.
>call
I have a hoot flute for a locater and am learning a slate pot call.
I just moved to a town of 5,000 from a college town close by of 78,000. My wife is making enough dough for me to not have to work for kind of however long I want. I'm really using thine to hunt and fish before she gets a job in a bigger city later. I am just learning this and am really excited for the season to open. Anybody got tips, tactics tricks?
