>>2176736Kure Beach North Carolina there is about a `1 mile wide strip by about 6 miles long area that can't be developed due to being a buffer zone to the Sunny Point military terminal across the river.
It is thick and dense woods (tons of deer and occasionally bear) on the river and less than 2 miles from the ocean.
The catch is the army has been patrolling it on occasion since 9/11 and have at times arrested and/or ticketed people for trespassing. I still have friends that camp there and none have ever been caught.
From the 60's-2000 there was all the time hermits, most were just alcoholic bums, living back there.
Before the army ran people off it was regularly used by mountainbikers, paintball, some deer poaching and 4wheeling so you weren't exactly remote.
The area I am talking about is from Ocean Blvd (Carolina Beach) in the North to Davis Road (Fort Fisher) highlighted in red and commonly called the Dow Plant.
At the Northern boundary is a small graveyard on the river owned by the Methodist Church and you can mostly continue all the way to the State Park except for a small portion where the town public works (& police pistol range) go to the river.
Past the Southern boundary you end up on the old USAF base.
