>>1296817They are called soil blocks, Originally a british thing brought over to the US by a gardener. Not very popular still but I enjoy them. They allow the roots to air prune and not wind around the bottom of a 6 pack or 4 pack. We use the small 20 blocker for lettuce and flower seeds and the larger 1 1/2 in and 2 in for larger seeds. They are made of equal parts peat moss, compost and 1/3 vermiculite or pearlite. The smaller blocks we don't use vermiculite in as they wont be in there very long.
