Well here they are. Officially the very first 'harvest' of the summer. Three watermelons picked straight off the vine. There are two more that look like they will likely survive and will grow for another week or so as long as I continue to water them, and one that the plant just gave up on. Oh well. Not the yield I was hoping for, but I still got something, which is not bad considering this is my second time growing anything and the first time growing melons.
Still waiting on my cantaloupes, of which I've netted much more. They're so close to maturity, but not quite there yet. I read that they do 50% of their sugar production in their last week, so no way am I taking those ones off prematurely. But it's gotten quite hot, so it seems like maturation has slowed down. I hope it doesn't adversely affect them. The leaves are dying off now, and I'm not sure if that's normal.
