It was silvery and shiny, and very difficult to tell apart from a salmon. The main reason I think it was a trout and not a salmon is because I got my hand around its tail when I was derping around in the waters edge after the hooks gave out; salmon are supposed to have a narrower indent before the tail fin that is perfect for grabbing, while you can't do the same with trout since their tails don't have that concave shape.
