>>2052102I think paper maps and compasses are kind of fun to use and they dont take up much space and weigh less than my phone. I get one from a site like mytopo with property boundaries and grid lines and waterproof paper and its straight even if it gets left out all night or rained on. I do have my phone in case I have a lysdexia moment and end up going the wrong direction.
I look for stuff on the map like cliffs or hills that have a higher view west/east than anything else around them for good sunset/sunrise views or that are little flat looking spots near a stream between some hills. Then I pick a place on a nearby road that looks like it will be a fun hike to the area and draw lines and take bearings before I go and then try it out. I just mainly go to national forests because the parks near me seem like there are way more trails and im not trying to tear up a wilderness area. I like having 'found' a camp site and then 'explored' some random hills around it I planned out from the comfiness of my apartment. I also like finding these little trash terrariums.
