Though as I have gained experience I have moved away from them and their kooky woke shit hasn't helped much. I used to buy about 50% of my gear from them, but now probably buy about 5% of my gear from them now. Most of my gear is now through smaller companies and mom & pop operations or making my own. When I encounter beginner backpackers that want to do more I always recommend REI to them for the following reasons. Generous return policy, decent named brand gear, knowledgeable employees and good prices on used gear or new gear when you can get it on sale.
