We are under very heavy covid restrictions, but we can do domestic travel so I am able to fly to Honshu and Hokkaido occasionally. (Domestic leisure travel just got banned until Jan 24 due to Omicron unfortunately). After seeing the beautiful views in Hokkaido and the forests around Sendai I really felt the draw to hiking. I have done some casual hikes in Okinawa (which also has a great landscape, but it's subtropical weather and too hot for my liking most of the year). But I've never done any serious hiking or camping yet.
We actually get issued 2 waterproofing bags with our military gear, I might use them inside the pack until I buy my own. I have a small one already that can fit a cellphone (took it on a waterfall trip).
